Geopolitics in the Eastern Mediterranean: Energy Security and Regional Cooperation

The AJC Transatlantic Institute and the Hanns Seidel Foundation hosted Cypriot Energy Minister Georgios Lakkotrypis for a keynote address on the burgeoning energy cooperation between Cyprus, Greece, and Israel in the Eastern Mediterranean and its potential to bolster EU energy security. Attended by 120 guests including dozens of ambassadors, MEPs, and business leaders, the ensuing expert panel discussion also featured AJC CEO David Harris and Israeli energy consultant Gina Cohen.

Raisi, the IRGC and Iran’s Future Direction of Travel

In partnership with MEP David Lega (EPP, Sweden) and MEP Frédérique Ries (Renew Europe, Belgium), the AJC Transatlantic Institute hosted Kasra Aarabi, Senior Analyst at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change in the European Parliament. Aarabi and MEP Lega discussed a wide range of issues: Iran’s military and security forces with a focus on Shia Militias across the Middle East and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the rise of ‘Imam Sadeghis’ – a cohort of highly indoctrinated technocrats that are just as zealous as the IRGC - and the EU attempts to make sense of the Raisi government and negotiate a new nuclear deal in Vienna.

AJC's Transatlantic Friends of Israel Opens Austrian Chapter

After the launch of the Transatlantic Friends of Israel (TFI) inter-parliamentary group in the EU Parliament in July 2019, the first national chapter opened on October 13 in the Austrian parliament, under the leadership of Chair MP Martin Engelberg and the support of lawmakers from the Greens, the Social-Democrats and NEOS, the liberal party.

Launch of Transatlantic Declaration: The EU Must Ban Hezbollah

On the twin anniversary eve of Hezbollah's bomb attacks in Argentina (1994) and Bulgaria (2012), the Transatlantic Friends of Israel (TFI) called on the EU to finally ban the terror group. The declaration was covered by global media outlets including POLITICO Europe, The Hill, Die Welt, Gazeta Wyborcza and The Jerusalem Post . At the virtual launch event, TFI Chair MEP Lukas Mandl, TFI Vice Chair MEP Dietmar Köster, AJC Transatlantic Institute Director Daniel Schwammenthal, and the Washington Institute’s Hezbollah expert Matthew Levitt discussed the initiative’s impact. AJC CEO David Harris delivered concluding remarks.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day 2020

The AJC Transatlantic Institute partnered with the Mission of Israel to the EU and NATO, the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung and B’nai B’rith International to commemorate the Holocaust. As part of an “Intergenerational Conversation,” Belgian Holocaust survivor Baron Julien Klener and British Jewish youth activist Hannah Rose shared their very personal experiences about the past and present. Commission Vice President Margaritas Schinas, the Israeli and German ambassadors, and AJC CEO David Harris also addressed the 150 guests who were invited to view artwork of Holocaust survivors made available by Yad Vashem.

20 EU Diplomats Visit Gaza Border with AJC

AJC Jerusalem co-organized with the Delegation of the EU to Israel a one-day tour for 20 EU Deputy Chiefs of Mission to the area surrounding Gaza. At the Kerem Shalom commercial crossing, where some 15,000 tons of goods pass daily, the diplomats saw up-close Israel’s critical role in ensuring the humanitarian needs of the people of Gaza are met. The group also spoke with Israelis in the town of Netiv Haasara, who live under the constant threat of rocket attacks.
