TAI Hosts Iran Expert Benham Ben Taleblu for a Series of Events on the War in the Middle East

Despite the build-up, the joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran came as a surprise to many in Europe. Subsequent Iranian strikes against Cyprus, coupled with rising energy prices, underscored how directly the EU was impacted by the escalation. In this context, TAI was a natural point of reference for informed analysis and engagement in Brussels, particularly given its expertise and network on transatlantic security and Middle East policy.

Responding swiftly to the need for clarity and expert insight, TAI organized a two-day visit to Brussels for Benham Ben Taleblu, Senior Director of the Iran Program and Senior Fellow at Washington, D.C.-based Foundation for the Defense of Democracies (FDD). On short notice, TAI convened a series of high-level meetings with senior European Commission staff, Members of the European Parliament, and diplomats from twelve EU member states.

In addition, TAI organized two closed-door discussions with Taleblu. The first was a particularly successful and well-attended exchange at the European Parliament, hosted by TFI member and PI alumnus Antonio López-Istúriz White. The meeting brought together 13 Members of the European Parliament from across all major political groups — a strong turnout that reflected the high level of interest in the topic and TAI’s convening power.

TAI also hosted a high-level dinner with senior diplomats from twelve EU member states, as well as representatives from the United Kingdom and Israel. Across all engagements, participants showed strong interest in Taleblu’s expertise on Iran’s internal dynamics and his assessment of U.S. strategic objectives. He emphasized the importance of transatlantic coordination in addressing the challenges posed by the Iranian regime and outlined potential avenues for closer EU–U.S. cooperation.
