Hobbes und Russland, by Daniel Rackowski

Energetic Intervention, by Emanuele Ottolenghi

The story broke in late July that the German company SPG (Steiner-Prematechnik-Gastec) had signed a 100-million euro deal with Iran to build three plants for compressed natural gas (CNG) production. There are three lessons to be learned from this tale...

Points east and west: The more Iran misbehaves, the more the West is ready to give, by Emanuele Ottolenghi

The story is told that, during Lebanon’s civil war (1975–90), four Soviet diplomats were kidnapped by a terrorist group. Two days later its leader received a box containing the testicles of his son – and a warning from the Russians: “Don’t ever bother our people again.” The Soviets’ reprisal was ruthless but effective. The three surviving hostages were released unharmed and no more Soviets were kidnapped in Lebanon. A brutal response targeting something deeply valued by the enemy deterred future attempts at blackmail. Is the West doing the same with Iran?

Iran's Deceptive Commercial Practices, by Emanuele Ottolenghi

Sanctions against Iran focus on nuclear and ballistic missile technology, drawing a distinction between legitimate and illegitimate trade. But a closer look at Iran’s commercial practices proves that Iran is systematically abusing its access to Western technology. Technology it is acquiring for civilian projects or for legitimate policing activities is being diverted in order to bolster Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps and its overwhelming economic role in Iran; and also for the development of Iran's clandestine nuclear activities. In short, Western technology sold to Iran is being utilized in ways that Iran's Western suppliers have never dreamed of, even in their worst nightmares. The current reality is that for a healthy profit and without moral compunctions, Western companies are legally selling Iran tools to repress its own citizens, to bully its neighbors, and to destabilize the entire region.

Sanctions? Business!, published in 'Die Welt', by Daniel Rackowski and Emanuele Ottolenghi

Since the discovery of Iran’s covert nuclear program, Europe has taken the lead in the diplomatic offensive to persuade Teheran to desist on its pursuit of a nuclear bomb. While Iran denies any such intention, its non-compliance with the non-proliferation regime, of which Iran is a member through its signature of the Non-Proliferation Treaty, continues to alarm Western diplomacy, especially in light of its parallel ballistic missile program.

Sanktionen? Geschäfte!, by Emanuele Ottolenghi and Daniel Rackowski

What European history can teach Lebanon, by Emanuele Ottolenghi

Will bringing Hizbullah into the political process encourage the A-team of global Islamic terrorism to morph into a peaceful Lebanese democratic player? The French seem to think so. UN Security Council Resolution 1559 calls upon all militias in Lebanon to disarm.

Risposta a Ernst Nolte, by Emanuele Ottolenghi

, by Emanuele Ottolenghi

President Bush is in Europe this week, where his meetings -- several of which are directly linked to aspects of U.S. Middle East policy -- represent important opportunities to build diplomatic bridges. Today, he visits Prague to address a democracy promotion conference organized by former Czech president Vaclav Havel, former Israeli deputy prime minister Natan Sharansky, and former Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar. The president's next stop is Heiligendamm, Germany, for the G8 meeting between the United States, Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Russia. On June 8, he continues on to Poland, Italy, Albania, and Bulgaria in order to boost new democracies, cement alliances in the former Communist Bloc, and meet with the Pope...
